This painting will be published on my 2007 Texas Classic Gas Stations Calendar. The Conoco Tower Station and U Drop Inn Cafe were built in 1936 in Shamrock, Texas at the Intersection of US Hwy 83 and Historic Route 66. This was the First Building in Shamrock to be built on Route 66 and it was considered to be the finest building between Oklahoma City and Amarillo! It currently houses a Museum and the Shamrock Chamber of Commerce.

This Painting was printed as my annual Christmas Gift Print that was sent to everyone who has made a purchase in the last three years! Shortly after Martha and I purchased the Ranch we traded Art for Ten Longhorn Calves and Four Horses. Being new to Ranching we had a fantasy of riding the range on horseback and working Cattle or just going for pleasure rides. We soon found out that although the Longhorns proved to be almost trouble free, the Horses were a different story. Reality was, that with our busy schedule, we rode horseback less and less until the Horses didn't want to be ridden any more and each time we tried to ride them it became a new adventure. The Two Horses in this painting, "looking so contented" were young mares and one was sure that if she wanted to change pastures all she had to do was run thru the Barbed Wire Fence, which often called for Veterinary Services. All four Horses had a talent for finding nails and other sharp objects and we frequently has small scale Rodeos removing nails from their hooves. One day I had enlisted the help of a Professional Cowboy to extract a nail from a hoof and in the process remarked to him that since we weren't riding our Horses that maybe we should sell them. He told me that he bought and sold Horses and made me an offer and before he came to his senses we had them all loaded in his trailer and Martha and I were "looking so contented" as we watched them ride off into the Sunset!

Stock tanks like this one at the Anchor X Ranch are quite common in Texas. During a heat wave, a stock tank often becomes a lifesaver for many wild creatures such as these Bobwhite Quail.

Available for purchase:

Prickly Pear Cactus can be a formidable obstacle for a critter trying to dine on Quail, but Bobwhites with their soft layer of feathers, seem to have no problem scooting under the cactus and out of danger. Although the Cactus is a nuisance it makes up for it with its gorgeous blossoms. The pink flowers are Phlox and the white ones are Thistle Poppies!

Available for purchase:

This title resulted from my annual contest to name one of my prints. The inspiration for this scene was on a dirt road between Yoakum and Victoria, Texas as I watched a covey of Bobwhite quail cross the road picking up gravel for their crops!

This Church is at New Belieu and was a candidate for my 1997 Texas Country Church Calendar, so since I hadn’t quite gotten Churches out of my mind, I decided to include this in my 1998 Calendar with some Cowboys, since most Cowboys I have met are religious folk. Face an angry Bull or a Cow protecting her Calf and you’ll get religion too!

Available for purchase:

This is one of those Horse before the Cart Paintings where I wanted to use the Sunburst in a Painting so I came up with an idea to justify it. The Cowboy is Morris Vann of Lampassas who gave me the privilege of riding in a round up several years ago!

Available for purchase:

This last year at our annual open house we picked some wildflowers from the field behind the house and made some centerpieces. After looking at this for a couple of days I decided it would make a nice painting.

The Cowboy Motel is located in Amarillo, Texas at 3619 East Amarillo Boulevard (Old Route 66!) I couldn't resist putting real Cowboys hanging out beneath the sign!

This old Chevrolet Pickup is one that I’ve used in several paintings over the past several years. I always go to the Stamford Cowboy Reunion and I don’t remember a year when this truck wasn’t parked beside the entrance to the Rodeo Arena. I think most of the Artists who participate in the Western Art Show have done a painting that included this truck, or they have at least photographed it with that idea in mind. Although I don't remember if I’ve ever met the owner I’ve been told that he works at the reunion each year. This truck has got to be one of the most aesthetically interesting I’ve seen and restoring it to like new condition would be the equivalent of destroying a great work of Art! The dogs weren’t really under this truck but that’s where any ranch dog in Texas wants to be. Certainly it’s where you will find our dogs on most hot summer days!

You can hear him first and if you are lucky you will see him standing tall and calling "Bob White" which is how this kind of Quail got its name. In the spring when the Bluebonnets bloom in Texas he seems to me to be the happiest!

The Cactus Theater, Built in 1938, is in Downtown Lubbock on what is now Buddy Holly Avenue and as I was standing in front of it, I got this idea to show Buddy cruising by in the 1958 Chevrolet Impala that was his last car. This Painting triggered the concept for the entire 1999 Calendar!

Available for purchase:

The Granada Theater is on lower Greenville Avenue in Dallas and was built in 1948. The Movie “JFK” was filmed in Dallas in 1991 but those are not the actors in the Lincoln.(You can't see the Details online so I'll tell you that's John and Jackie Kennedy in the cat and the lincoln is the same kind that JFK was assasinated in and the licence plate shows the date of the assasination) You never can tell who you’ll see Cruisin’ Greenville Avenue!

Available for purchase:

This Drive In was in Jewett, Texas and was closed down when I photographed it in 1981. It reminded me of my teenage years and the nights we spent cruising from one end of Austin to the other, with no particular goal except to look cool and see who else was cruisin’. Wow ya’ll, was that Elvis in that Merc?

Available for purchase:

This Kitten is the same one I used in my Painting “Beauty and the Beastie” except that I put him on one of our Rugs playing with a Christmas Ornament!
