The US Alabama anchored off of St. Joseph Island and General Taylor and his men attempted to take a smaller boat into Rockport but ran aground on a sand bar and were marooned for 4 days before being rescued by fishermen. Once on shore, General Taylor and his men camped under this Oak Tree waiting for his next assignment!
